Chuck has played guitar since the early 80’s
and has been in more than a few great Albuquerque bands including the seminal alternative rockers Splinter Fish in the late 80’s/early 90’s, world beat bands Animal Opera and Saha World Telegraph in the 90’s and jam bands The Withdrawals and Mucho Buddha in the 2000’s.
Musical Inspiration
Currently Chuck is recreating the sounds of Pink Floyd with Pink Freud and playing with improv rock group Carli’s Angels.
Chuck’s playing style is a mix of classic psychedelic rock, indie, afrobeat, alt-country, and jazz. He has been recognized as one of Albuquerque’s best guitarists in the Weekly Alibi’s readers polls.
Chuck draws inspiration from many artists and bands, but some of his favorites are Gov’t Mule, Los Lobos, Son Volt, Brian Eno, Pink Floyd, and Bill Frisell.
In addition to electric and acoustic guitar, Chuck also plays lap steel and mandolin.
Carli’s Angels
Carli’s Angels grew out of the Chuck Hawley Group after Chuck and bassist Douglas Bellen added saxophonist Carli Marshall, keyboardist Tony Orant and drummer Kevin Kinane. This group specializes in improvisational rock and funky worldbeat styles.
Collaboration with Shelly
Recently, I’ve been composing and writing music with my wife Shelly Ley for an upcoming duo that incorporates electronic music, acoustic instruments, and voice. Stay tuned for updates on our musical project!
